《老人与海》是海明威晚年最杰出的一部作品。整个故事叙述的就是关于一个遭遇命运捉弄的老渔民圣地亚哥的故事。故事情节简单：一位老渔夫在连续八十四天没有捕到鱼，可在远离陆地的的大海上遇到了一条巨大的大马林鱼。
经过三天三夜耐力与毅力的较量，圣地亚哥终于杀死了那条大马林鱼。可在他返航的途中，却遭到了鲨鱼的袭击，当他终于回到港口时，那条大马林鱼只剩下鱼头、鱼尾和一条光秃秃的脊骨。
交上霉运、一筹莫展的老人在离海岸很近的水域都一直无法捕到鱼，于是他凭着自己丰富的经验来判断，决定勇敢地孤身一个人去更远的海域去捕大鱼。历经了平常人无法接受的'千难万险，老人不断地挑战自己身心的极限，终于捕获了他有生以来见过最大的一条大马林鱼。
即使最后人们能看到的只是那大马林鱼的大尾巴直竖在小船船梢的后边，鱼赤露的脊骨像一条分叉的白线，还有带着突出的长嘴的淡紫色的脑袋，而在这头尾之间却一无所有。
但这让我仍然能如此真切地感受到这条大鱼的伟岸和捕鱼者的力量。老人失败了，但我认为这只是他力气和肉体上的失败，他的精神却是胜利的。特别是他的锲而不舍、坚持不懈的精神值得我在今后的学习和生活上发扬光大。只要这样，我就会战胜一个又一个困难，成功地到达理想的目的地。
